Autumn Harvest at the Jersey Shore

This weekend I reluctantly admitted that summer is over here at the Jersey Shore. I took a look at some of my beach walk finds that have accumulated over the past several months on the back porch.

And I decided it was time to sort them and "can" them into wide mouth canning jars. This should make it easier to find the perfect beach glass, pebble, seashell or other found object for each project. I'm excited about all the flat pieces I have that will be perfect to set like precious gems in my jewelry. It's almost like finding them on a beach walk all over again.

Maybe next weekend I can find a space in my studio for all these jars.

Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy the turning of the leaves with me. It's still a perfect time to gather treasures at the beach.

I always feel good when I see others recycling as a part of making their art. I was glad to share some techniques.

This week on Ebay

I put some jewelry up on eBay today. Haven't done that in months, or maybe years, so we'll see what happens. You might be able to get some good deals with these.

I put up three of my soldered glass pendants that feature my original collages. These are based on the concept of Alice in a Steampunk Wonderland. I create the collages, then scan the originals and have them printed on professional grade printers. I then sandwich the print between glass and use a stained glass technique to soft solder them together. This solder has no lead or nickel so is safe for jewelry.

I also put up two rings that I made this week on President's Day weekend. They are made of coins. I think they're fun. If I get much interest, I'll offer custom coin rings - any size, year, coin, etc. I think they would be fun for special anniversary gifts or birthdays. Even a shower gift could have the bright penny ring as part of the gift wrapping. Kids would love these too, I think.

Ring a Day and Tears for Haiti

This year I joined a flickr group called Ring a Day. It was started by Nina Dinoff as a challenge to jewelers of all types, to be inspired each and every day of 2010. The challenge is to create a ring and then post a picture of it on the Ring a Day gallery. Sometimes the pictures don't get posted until a few days later (almost always in my case). But the day of creation is listed, so at the end of the year, there should be close to 365 rings for each participant.

This has been a fun and inspiring challenge. The concept of a ring is all that is required, so we've come up with some silly and some artsy examples. There's a freedom to this, to play with different ideas or techniques. As an artist, my creativity floodgates are open. Some days I can't stop writing in my sketchbook all the ideas. It's wonderful to think, maybe I'll actually get to try most of them, since I've dedicated a part of every day to it. And I've been pushed to make some ideas that I've had gathering dust (always a good thing for an artist to do).

It's also becoming a bit of an addiction to watch each day as new rings are added to the group. There are so many artists with different styles and approaches. If you take a look, you are sure to be surprised, awed and have a laugh too. I'm reminds me of the Lark 500 series books. This summer I was traveling for a month. Suitcase space was precious, but I packed both 500 Wedding Rings and 1000 Rings books. Why? It just gives me energy and inspiration to see forms of pure creativity. I get the same surge checking out the new additions to the RAD gallery. So do take a look and enjoy!

Tears for Haiti

Since we are making the ring each day, they are reflecting our lives and concerns, in some cases like a journal. As you can imagine, this past week our concerns about the conditions in Haiti have shown in the rings.

On January 13th, as the news of the earthquake was on my radio, I decided to make a carved ring. Often when you see a carved ring, it was originally carved in wax. Wax is easier and more forgiving than metal to carve. It's also less wasteful, which is important for gold or other precious metals. But carving in metal is more immediate. When it's done, it's done - no casting. And the final product is one of a kind, a testament to the time involved, unique to a memory. I wanted something to reflect my concerns of that day.

It took me several hours to work from a ring of square sterling silver metal, to the ring pictured here, which I call Tears for Haiti. Stylized tears flow one to another, in a circle of silver.

I am donating this ring to be auctioned, with other rings from the RAD group, to raise funds for Haiti relief. Thomasin Durgin of Metalriot has generously offered her time to run the auctions soon. Watch her blog for updates. I'll post details here too, when available.

Try Something You've Never Done Before

I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it.

The last few weeks have been frustrating for me. I am always trying out new ideas and sometimes the final product is not what I was attempting. These "challenges" seem to come in clusters and so, I've had one disappointment after another recently. When you are working with found objects or just trying something new, there's often no clear cut method. It takes so much experimenting to not only get the technique, but to then get it to do what you need.

It is difficult sometimes to go against the norm. If only a simple clasp or a traditional setting were all I needed to complete a piece of jewelry, life would be so simple. But, there is something inside me that just doesn't see the purpose of creating another piece of jewelry that you've seen a million times before. I always have to be different and so do my creations. Believe me, this does not make life easy, even though it does make it interesting.

I was feeling a bit disjointed today, eyeing all my unfinished projects, when I saw the above quote from Picasso.

Picasso was always trying out new styles and techniques. So, he must have always been doing things he did not know how to do. He did them anyway, and kept on doing them, because he wanted to learn how to do them.

This quote inspired me to take a fresh look at some of my recent unfinished projects. And do you know what? They all came together. I see a solution. I can combine the different techniques I've been working on to get exactly what I was aiming for.

I'm off to do this now. Meanwhile, I hope the quote inspires you too. Don't be afraid to try something you've never done, it's the only way you'll learn how to do it.

More Inspirations from The Met

Just last week, a new exhibit opened at the Met called Art of the Samurai - Arms and Armor 1156-1868. Learning the properties of metal and moving that metal is what jewelery making is all about. Those who make the Samurai arms are total masters of metal. So, this exhibit was interesting to me, from a jeweler's perspective.

The first half of the exhibit is mostly the blades themselves, shining in space, incredibly old and looking as though they were made yesterday. All I could think of while looking at them was to wonder at the knowledge and the strength of the person who forged them.

The second half of the show was the armor. This was interesting. Again, some of the pieces were hundreds of years old, but in perfect condition. Most were kept in families through many generations. It turns out, each Samurai had a special style of his own. They liked the bold, over the top look! Check out the guy in the gold necklace who is the poster boy for the show. His actual armour is in the show. The antlers are black lacquered and glittery! I just love the huge gold prayer beads he wore. They contrast with the black just right. This was a fun show to go through, opening my mind to different approaches to metal and ornament.

GARNET BUCKLES
On the first floor there is a hallway that I often find myself in at the Met. It's on the way back to the Great Hall. There are some ancient pieces of Celtic and Frank items. I'm always drawn to a few of these and finally took a picture, so that I might be able to use them as an inspiration someday. The red is slivers of sliced garnets. I think these were from the 500s AD. Someday I'd like to make something like this. I'm starting to think about buckles and this would be a good start, don't you think?

American Stories, Paintings of Everyday Life at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC

Another one of the newer exhibits I viewed at The Met on Friday was called American Stories, Paintings of Everyday Life 1765-1915. (Be sure to click on the link because they have a great online sample of the paintings and narrations of the show.)

This show is so well put together. It's a series of rooms, small collections that each make a point and lead us through American Art. It's not preachy, it's enjoyable. So many old favorites are there, but there were quite a few surprises for me.

One of the first paintings made me laugh. It's called Sea Captains Carousing in Surinam, ca 1752-58. The scene looks right from one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The painter has poked fun of himself and painted himself vomiting in the hallway.

Another surprise, Why didn't I ever know about Lilly Martin Spencer (American, 1822–1902)? Her paintings are delightful. I am going to look into more about her. Painting from a women's point of view in the mid-nineteenth-century, with wit. We can't get enough of that.

Some of my favorite American painters had multiple works in the show - Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, William Merrit Chase and John Singer Sargent. But walking into one of the rooms, I was drawn to a huge yellow canvas. I was surprised it was Frederick Remington's Fight for the Water Hole.It looked so different outside of the Western themes that I'd expect it in. In this room it more than held it's own, it dominated the room. It looked to me like a brand new painting, because of the fresh perspective.

It's a lovely exhibit. If you can't go to see it, the online exhibit is worth browsing through.

A visit to the Met

Yesterday I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I have a membership there this year and have been trying to take advantage of that. I wholly recommend anyone in the area to do this. The Met has so much to offer and there are new exhibits every month, so there is always something new to discover there.

I went to see the special Vermeer exhibit called Vermeer's Materpiece The Milkmaid. The focal point, of course is the titled piece, on loan to the Met. They have also gathered all their own Vermeers together and some other works by Vermeer's contemporaries.

The Milkmaid surprised me. I thought I knew Vermeer. I thought I knew what all the fuss was about him. The light, the composition, the servant girl, I've seen these before and admired them. I have always loved Young Woman with a Water Pticher.

But the Milkmaid is not the same! It is crisp, crisp, crisp lines. It is so much more of a photographic portrayal. And the colors are just so right. It is beautiful. It is worth going to see if you have the opportunity.

I loved that the exhibit had the other works nearby, because I went back and forth, looking at Water Pitcher and Milkmaid, observing the differences between them. Water Pitcher is more diffused, as through a veil. I still love Water Pitcher, but have even more love and respect for Vermeer after seeing The Milkmaid.

It also pointed out to me yet again, how important it is to see works of art firsthand. A picture of the works can never fully give you the same experience. In a book, pictures of these two works will look very similar. In the same room with both originals, you will be struck by their differences.

What's Going On?

In the past few days, I stirred up alot of changes. Actually, I've been working on all these changes for months, but now they are something you can see.

This site is a portfolio and a marketplace for my art jewelry. I found that I needed a place to showcase and maintain a focus on my collections. It's also a place to point to for show entries, galleries and wholesale accounts.

Every part of the pieces on this site are handmade by me. No purchased charms or earring hooks, clasps or other jewelry supply findings, i.e., no shortcuts.

The site is a little bare right now, but I am so happy to present it. It's a start on this new journey, just a step forward. I hope you enjoy browsing it. Most items there are also for sale, both retail and wholesale.

Amethyst Lobster - Unique Jewelry is undergoing a complete transformation.

Creating the new signature site for my art jewelry required me to re-evaluate the Amethyst Lobster site. I believe it was getting confusing for customers. So, it is now wiped out and I will be building it up again with a clearer and more cohesive style. It will focus mainly on the (obvious from the name) nautical and seaside inspired hand-crafted jewelry.

Since I was making changes to Amethyst Lobster, I decided it was time to move it to it's own domain. I originally started it as a part of my Lobster Lu Postcards site. It grew and grew and really should have had it's own domain years ago. So..now it does at www.AmethystLobster.com .

I hope this helps to clear up some confusion. Please feel free to send your comments or concerns. I'm still here and will soon have a few of the old favorites back on Amethyst Lobster, as well as many more new items on both sites.

Escape from the Ordinary

I was supposed to be working on some rings this week. But the Esc key pendant that I started a few weeks ago kept bugging me. So, I let the plans drop to heed the call of the Muse.

This is a sterling silver square that I textured with a hammer and other items of destruction. The sawed out circle has a brass collar. The focus is the Esc key from an old computer. My way of recycling. The keys are very high for jewelry, so I had to saw the plastic key in half. And the shape of the key is difficult for this type of bezel setting. I will try a different method for my next computer key. There's a copper "scrap" with two tiny 1.5mm Cubic Zirconias in a burnished setting. I love the way they sink into the copper and contast with it.

I will put this on a simple brown suede cord.

Wearing this, I will state my desire to escape from the ordinary that surrounds me. My jewelry, too, I hope will escape from that. Some people find comfort in the common, but I feel stifled and bored with it. So, I'll continue to listen to the Muse. I'll work on more designs to recycle computer keys, so that I can offer a line to my customers soon. I know my customers are always looking for a way to state their uniqueness. Soon, we will all escape from the common.

A New Day, A New Direction
Well, I did it! I finished the course at Studio Jewelers, Ltd. It was not easy, but it was sooooooooo wonderful. I learned more about making jewelry than I thought was possible. I am so grateful to the wonderful teachers there. They are really the best!

So, now I have so many new skills and so many new designs swirling in my head. First, I need to set up my own studio so that I can do more of the types of work I just learned. There is so much, though. A little at a time is all that is possible.

But the main, major tool for a bench jeweler is the bench itself. It's so specialized, there are so many features that make perfect sense and become a necessary part of creating.

The jeweler's bench height is important. It's higher than a regular table or desk. The bench pin (the wedge of wood sticking out of the middle) is where most work happens. That often needs to be eye level, or chin level, for comfort. A chair that easily adjusts height, is also required. There are two openings on either side of the bench where slats of wood for arm rests can go. When setting stones or holding something firm, the arm rest helps to hold the project steady. My bench also has holes to hold mandrels. When banging rings or bracelets, it's so much easier to have the mandrels held firm. Another very important part of the jeweler bench is the pull out metal lined tray. Without it, the floor is a mess of metal or wax shavings and dust. Besides, tiny stones and metal pieces of a project tend to fly at the most unexpected time. Without a bench, a jeweler will spend most of her time, on hands and knees, searching for a stone that dropped. Believe me..I know this for a fact! There's also a cut-out tray that slides out and has a little shelf above it. This
is another way to catch the precious pieces and ensure there is no space between the jeweler and the bench. If you are working with a precious metal, you really don't want to lose anything. Some frequently used tools can go on the shelf. In my case, a jeweler's saw and some files.

A jeweler's bench is much more than just a workbench. It really is a tool, that allows a smoother creation process.

I was so excited to recently receive a jeweler's bench as a gift. Here it is! It took quite a bit to get it where it stands today. The UPS couldn't handle it (cracked the first one). So, I drove myself up to Zak's in the Diamond Distrit, NYC and in the pouring rain, they loaded a new one and took back the broken one. (Those guys are great, if you need any jeweler tools). I was so happy with this brand new bench in the back of my van. I looked up and realized I was in the middle of Times Square. The lights were shining for a new day, a new direction in my designs. The whole world of moving the metal ahead of me.

Here's a picture of the bench before being christened. If you can see, the bench pin is a rectangle. I had to cut it, as jewelers before me, into a v shape. This requires woodworking saws. What an ordeal! I felt like I was committing to jewelery making as I realized again and again, I did not want to be a woodworker!

It stands in an alcove of windows that overlook the forest. It is a joy to sit at this bench and create objects to adorn my friends - those I have met and those I hope to meet someday. I look forward to this bench getting old, with nicks and holes from making many fresh and inspiring necklaces, bracelets, rings, brooches and maybe a tiara or two. Oh...and the kitty is looking for a diamond cat collar.

Expanding My Skill Set

This week, at school, I made this ring. It involved transferring a pattern, sawing two identical pieces, soldering at 3 places, lots of sanding and polishing and finally a little pearl and rhinestone setting.

I like the design of a circle in a shape and the side view profile of space between the two identical forms. I would like to play with this concept in the future with different materials and finishes.

Calder Jewelry Exhibit Inspires Brass Bangings!

The very soon to be over exhibit of Calder's jewelry at the Met soooo inspired me this winter! I love brass and Calder did too. It is very hard to make jewelry and not want to try some of his designs. They are often simple and yet stunning.

So, here are a few bangings I've been doing. The M initial pin is almost an exact copy. Just for myself. The original Calder's were huge, this one isn't so big. And I did a bit of a matte finish on the brass. Calder used sterling or iron for the pins themselves. The contrast of the dark metal with the brass is interesting. I tried just using brass.

The spike necklace is perhaps not done. Calder made one with a spike between every ball of the "plumber's chain". Those spikes are over 4 inches. Calder's jewelry was BIG and often unwearable. I find that so inspiring. Should I leave this necklace with the few spikes in the front that is more wearable, or make the sunburst of a necklace that is totally art and amazing and not quite wearable?

Well, these are like drawings, little studies in the style of a great artist.

Is that a tiara for a little bird, or an over the top brass ring? Depends on your perspective, I suppose. It was a fun ring to create. I made it quickly in between pounding the necklace spikes. Calder made some lovely flower blossom necklaces and tiaras. I didn't see any rings exactly like this, but it is inspired by him. It's very light and easy to wear. Banging it made it nice and strong. I think I'll experiment and expand on this design. Some earrings to be added too.

Back from a Renaissance Faire

My sincere apologies to my online friends and customers. I have been spending a minimum amount of time online this summer, as I've been doing several markets, fairs and festivals each week. The outdoor selling season is coming to a close soon, so I will be concentrating more online shortly.

This weekend I did The Lakewood Renaissance Faire. It was my first Renn Fair as a vendor and it was really fun. I had to alter my booth display a bit for the theme, as well as my wardrobe! Here are some photos, courtesy of my son.

Wearable Art Exhibitors at the Pasadena Bead and Design Show

So now that I blogged about FOOD in Pasadena, maybe I should say something about some of the incredible people that I met there.

I loved being in the California Ballroom. I was surrounded by such high quality artists, it was incredibly inspiring. The whole show was hand-picked, high quality, but the California Ballroom seemed to have most of the nationally known names. Of course, I must say, I did not have alot of time to visit with artists in the other rooms and I am biased since that's the room I was in. That said, the California Ballroom ROCKED!

First of my new found friends was Kate from L. O'Neill Design. Check out their website here at www.loneilldesign.com.
Kate and her partner make the most amazing jackets and purses. The styles are distinctive and flattering, yet timeless. Kate's booth was directly in front of mine, and I watched many women trying the jackets on. It didn't seem to matter what body type a woman was, there was a jacket to make her look elegant and stylish. Many had matching purses too. I want one of the swing coats! Someday!

My neighbor on my right was Sharon Cipriano from Art Heaven. I've admired Sharon's work through magazines and other publications for years. The quality of her work in person is just stunning. Her handmade pendants are heirloom pieces. And the stones she uses on her necklaces are unlike any I've seen before. She has a great eye for using a strand of stones to pick up a detail in the pendant. It was a treat to meet her and she's such a sweet person. She really took me under her wing and gave some great advice and encouragment. I really appreciated that. I hope to see her again, somewhere down the beaded road.

The Inner Circle
Several of us exhibitors were situated so we formed an inner circle in the room.
Linda McCollister of Eye of the Beholder Jewelry Art and I really bonded. She is just one of those people who has a contagious excitement for beauty and art. I think everyone got a hug from Linda. Her metalwork and beaded necklaces are totally unique. She's out there breaking the rules and it is so fun to see and be inspired by it. I am sure you'll be hearing much more about her art in the years to come.

Linda's good friend Helen Cole of Helen Cole Jewelry Art was at the next booth. Helen has been making fine jewelry for years. She works in copper, silver and gold. Experienced jewelers were stopping in awe at Helen's display case. I especially loved the Amethyst Maker, shown here. Helen told me she primarily does custom work, which allows her to make pieces she knows will be treasured.

On my left was Mary Andreani of Andreani Studios and her friend, Marylu. (Yes, another Lu Marylu - we share all but a space in our names!) You may have seen Mary Andreani's beautiful beaded necklaces and bracelets in Ornament magazine advertisments. She does beautiful work and chooses the wonderful stones. I coveted a a big beaded turquoise necklace that looked like Sleeping Beauty mine turquoise.

There are many more exhibitors I'd like to post about. Maybe just a quick mention and a link will be enough for you to get a feel for the wonderful talent I was surrounded by. Teri from Teripelio Designs works with unique and bold beads and stones. Her incredible work is sold in many shops in California. Lucy Arnold showed one of a kind handcrafted jewelry. Her display is so earthy and elegant, with natural wood and green pebbles, it drew the shoppers to her booth. Gloria Askin had colorful creations that were laugh out loud fun. Gloria bought a pair of Girl with the Big Earrings earrings from me, so you know she's not afraid of funk. Sue Rutherford of Davis, CA showed her custom beadwork. She was so sweet and had such delicate macrame style necklaces, I just had to mention her. Seek her out at the next show. Kitty and her daughter at The Reckless Necklace had an amazing number of all out funky fun and chunky big creations.

Oh yeah, and there was me, Mary Lu from Amethyst Lobster. My Mystery Window Earrings, which are in the current issue of Ornament magazine, proved to be a big seller.

Back from Pasadena

I'm back from The Pasadena Bead and Design Show and still recovering from cross country jet lag (I don't travel well).

The town of Pasadena was nice but sleepy. I took walks in the morning, before the show, but not much was open then. In the evenings, after the show, we did find some great little restuarants. I was disappointed by the shops though. I thought there would be more interesting boutiques, but all I saw were brand name chains. It felt like being in an open air mall.

The first night, after set up, we walked to the Yardhouse. It's a huge sports bar type restuarant. At that point, neither Jessie nor I had slept more than 2 hours in the last 48, so we were incoherent and the next day were amazed we had actually made it through dinner and getting back to the hotel. I remember the burgers were good though.

On Thursday, we went to Madres, a restaurant owned by the actress Jennifer Lopez and run by her family. It was a treat to see authentic Shabby Chic decor as Rachel Ashwell had decorated it herself. The food was wonderful and reasonably priced. It didn't really strike me as Old Havana, as it's portrayed, but rather Grandmother's Living Room with the old rose sofa. The fried plantains were the BEST ever!

On another night, we looked in Old Town for a good meal. There were long waits at the most interesting spots and then we stumbled into Barney's Beanery. It's an amazing Route 66 type place. The menu is a newspaper and has just about everything you might want, including low prices. The decor is really funky. Imagine 100's of license plates, nailed to the ceiling, choppers and bikes in the window, a gutted out school bus, with tables inside, pool tables everywhere, three levels, hundreds of tvs, including one at every table, playing old mtv videos. Plus the food was good!

By the last night, we were so over Pasadena and homesick for some East Coast food. Jessie found Mi Piace that promised to be a New York style Italian restaurant, bakery and lounge. I had a good feeling as soon as I saw most people were dressed in black. It turned out to be the best meal we had the whole trip.

Next post I'll cover more about the actual show. Now for another cup of coffee!

She inspired me to create earrings like hers, with loops over the ears. I don't find beautiful shells like she did on the beach, I find soda cans.

Clues from Keyboards Past - Art Jewelry

I've been frantically trying to create enough new pieces to bring to the Pasadena Bead and Design Show, which will start next Thursday. I'm very excited about a new design I've created, a hybrid of a choker and a chain charm necklace. The back is a sturdy oxidized sterling wire and the front is a specially antiqued brass chain with interesting stories and mysteries of beads and treasures. The necklace is very comfortable and easy to put on, as the clasp is in the front. It's also adjustable and can be worn with each strand on either side, or the two together. (I know, I need some pictures to explain this. Coming soon.)

Sneak preview of 2008 Mystic Isle Collection - Amethyst Lobster Unique Jewelry

I started to put some of the new 2008 line onto the site. Well..not much yet! As of today, just showing earrings which will be in the next issue of Ornament Magazine. There is also a bit of one of the new choker and chain necklaces. Both of these will be in the Mystic Isle Collection.

The earrings are called Antiqued Mystery Windows Earrings .

These brass earrings with oxidized sterling silver wires are created with authentic antique papers and weathering techniques. Each pair is unique to itself, showing snippets of an antique text. The brass window slides open to reveal just a bit more. You receive the clues as if an overheard conversation, a story unfolds, and you become a part of it.

The origins of language are closely tied to the origins of adorning ourselves with jewelry. The 2008 Collection explores the ties of language, jewelry and above all the mystery that we all strive to solve.

Success for all students

One of the nice perks about selling at local events is that I get to know some of my neighbors better. Last week I had fun selling next to Susan Decker. She makes beautiful bracelets. They are customized name bracelets that make a special gift for moms and grandmoms. The alphabet beads are sterling silver and the bracelets are very sweet. Getting Ready for 2008 Line of Art Jewelry

Dear Friends,

I am busy working on a complete new line of wearable art jewelry.
I will offer the new 2008 line of Amethyst Lobster - Unique Jewelry on a totally revised website in January 2008.
At that time, I'll offer both wholesale and retail online purchases.

Revolutionary Jewelry

As we begin this week of celebrations and fireworks, fairs and parades, I've been thinking of the women who made it possible to live in a land of HOPE. That's what I think freedom is, the power and ability to hope for a better life, even if you are not living it now.

What is the most inspiring icon to those in battle? Isn't it a flag? Wow - so crafty girl Betsy Ross, with her crafty little hands, sewed us a symbol as powerful as any speech. Speeches are forgotten, but the flag waving still brings a tear to the eye of millions each July. Thanks, crafty girl!

Here in Monmouth County, NJ, we have another woman hero of the Revolution. Her nickname is Molly Pitcher. She brought water to the soldiers at the Battle of Monmouth. When they needed someone to fire the cannon, she was there, doing what was needed. She was fighting for the right to the very land I live on. Thanks, Molly!

I'm always trying to figure out what motivates us to wear jewelry. There's a story and a symbol, I think, behind each decision we make, when we reach for that piece of adornment.

We all fight some type of battle every day. The right piece of jewelry gives us power and inspiration to continue. Thanks to Molly and Betsy's inspiration, I'll try hard to make you Revolutionary jewelry. It may take a bit of courage to wear it, but it's always unique and powerful.

I try to update this blog at least once a week, to tell you in general what I'm creating. There is another blog that I add to daily, called Earrings Every Day. Just click here to see.

Lately I've been playing with clay again. Here are some photos of recent creations. The clay I'm using is white, so I've been mixing paints instead of clay colors. I feel it allows more control to achieve the finish I need. These are really alot of fun, but take about 3 days to complete the process.

Custom Handmade Artisan Jewelry for Gifts, Bridal, Prom and Special Events

One of the benefits of buying jewelry from the person who creates it, is that you often have custom options available, often for little or no extra charge. I'd like to tell you about some of the options that are available with my own jewelry.

Types of Metals for Custom Made Jewelry

Most jewelry incorporates some metal, even if only the clasp on a necklace. I work primarily in sterling silver. That is what I keep in stock and show in the pictures of my items. If you prefer another metal, just ask me. I keep some stock of 14k gold filled supplies on hand also, and a small amount of copper. Allow extra time for an order and I can make most items in 14k gold, 14k g.f., copper or brass. I am also starting to use patinas on sterling silver, so let me know if you'd like an antiqued darkened silver.

Types of Clasps for Custom Made Jewelry

Some people prefer certain types of clasps for their necklaces or bracelets. I often use a toggle clasp. These are very easy to put on or off, once you have tried them. I was skeptical the first time I saw them, thinking gravity would make them come apart. But I've now been wearing them for years and only have a problem if a bracelet is too large anyway. If you've never tried a toggle clasp, I encourge you to give it a try. They are really great for the elderly and those with arthritic hands.

Magnetic clasps are also an option that I sometimes use. They are also a favorite for those who have trouble with traditional lobster claw or c-clasps.

If you are not sure of the length you need, for bracelet or necklaces, then a chain with a lobter claw clasp is best. It usually allows for 1 to 3 inches of adjustment. This is a good clasp to use for a gift when you are unsure of the size.

Please let me know if you prefer one type clasp over another. I keep most styles in stock and can often change them on items already made.

Custom Handmade Artisan Earrings

Earrings are the easiest item to custom make. I make most of my earrings when receiving the order, so changes are usually not a problem.

The first option with earrings concerns the posts - both the metal and the style. See my section above concerning the type of metal options.

Ear wire Styles for Earrings

There are several types of ear wires posts used in earrings. I normally use the french hook style and include a small rubber or plastic stopper that ensures your earring stays in place. This goes behind your earlobe and is unseen and comfortable. The french hook style tends to disappear into the design, which is the reason I like to use it.

Leverbacks are also popular. They are a bit more expensive, but they are very secure. This is a good option for heavier earrings and more expensive stones. Leverbacks become more of a presence in the design and might not be right for certain designs.

There is also an option for those who do not have pierced ears. Non-pierced options will be either clip-ons or screwbacks.

Length and Styles for Custom Earrings

Earring lengths start at 1/2 to 1 inch for a simple bead or pearl, usually sandwhiched between two tiny metal or crystal beads.

Slightly longer earrings are made with 2 or 3 beads. This is a nice option to go with a necklace that has several beads in it.

Another delicate earring style is a single bead set on a hammered spike. Pearls work especially well with this.

Chains are very popular right now and I love to add several beads to a chain. They can be delicate or chunky.

Keep in mind that custom earrings can be made for you to match any of the necklaces you purchase from me, even if I don't have matching earrings shown. Please just ask, because I always try to keep at least a few extra matching beads for just such a request. I've mentioned only classic styles here, but trendy styles can also be custom made.

Custom Hand-made Artisan Necklaces

Necklace Lengths

The length of the necklace is the simplest option for customization. If you see a necklace you like, but you need a different size, don't hesitate to let me know. Long necklaces can be shortened and shorter necklaces may be lengthened by either adding more beads or adding some chain or extra rings to the clasp. There is often no extra charge for this.

The easiest way to decide on a length is to measure a necklace you own already. The length is from one end of a clasp to the other. So, for example, a necklace that hangs down 12 inches, is a 24 inch necklace, since the full strand is measured.

Custom Necklace Styles - Simple Strand Necklaces

Some examples of a simple style for necklaces are the classic round beaded strand, perhaps with a special clasp. This can be created in any length.

Chain Style Necklaces - Y and Long Beaded Chain

Chains are also very popular right now. The Y necklace, created with wrapped wire and chain can be used for any combination of bead types and colors.

Gemstones can be wired to each other without chain for a more organic style.

I have also made some long chains with crystals and/or small gemstones wrapped between the links. They are very delicate and can be doubled for a fuller look or worn long with other shorter necklaces for the layered look. I like to wear one long beaded chain in the summer, when the humidity here makes it difficult to wear too much jewelry. (I'll try to get a better picture of this example soon).

Pendant Necklaces

Pendants or crosses or other focal points can always be added to a necklace. Occasionally I will string a pendant on a simple chain or cord. I purchase pendants and crosses in quantity and have many in stock, that are not shown on the website. Let me know if there's a special stone or style you need.

Some examples of pendant styles I carry are large abalone, gemstone crosses, and large multi-gem pendants.

Special Notes for Bridal Party Jewelry

Pearls and crystals are a favorite for bridal jewelry.

Pearls now come in many shapes and colors and Swarvoski crystals come in hundreds of colors as well. It is very easy to match the colors for the bride and each of her bridesmaids with a different color for each, if needed.

Swarvoski is a brand name for the company that has created lead crystal beads and rhinestones for the jewelry trade, for generations. Other crystals are inferior in shine - like comparing a lead crystal vase to a cut glass vase. The lead crystal can be breathtaking while the cut glass will be merely pretty.

Swarvoski crystals are available in hundreds of colors and finishes, although we are all limited by what our suppliers carry. They issue new colors every season and do discontinue others.

Some special examples of my earrings designs using Swarvoski crystals include a simple delicate chain with tiny crystals of your color choice on the end. Another option is a cluster of 3 or 5 crystals with a single large pearl, gemstone bead or themed glass bead beneath them.

By the way, you may hear the term Swarvoski pearls. Those are glass pearls made by Swarvoski. I don't use them in my designs, because I am spoiled with a close proximity to suppliers of genuine cultured freshwater pearls. I prefer the natural and feel they will last longer and are a better value than the glass. If you are set on Swarvoski pearls, I will consider them for special custom orders, but I do not have them in stock.

I hand select ALL my supplies, from clasps to pearls, beads to crystals, by going to large suppliers in New York city, on foot, with fabric swatches if needed. These are the suppliers who stock your local beadstores and many of the online bead shops. There is great variety and I enjoy finding the perfect match for your special day.

Custom Colors, Gemstones and Glass Beads

Everyone has their favorite colors and I'm no exception. I tend to use certain colors in my jewelry and tend not to include others, unless requested. If you don't see your colors or gemstones here, just let me know. I'm usually very happy to buy more beads! Swarvoski crystals and glass beads come in more colors than I can list here, so designs that use them can usually be custom made easily to match your needs. Gemstones are usually sold in standard sizes and cuts, so there is often the same flexibility with gemstone jewelry, although certain stones or shapes are not always available.

Incorporating a Special Object or Theme into Custom Jewelry

This is what I love to do, incorporate special objects into my jewelry designs. Please let me know if you have a special object or theme that you'd like in a design.

This is a great idea for a special gift. It can be as simple as a themed charm, a postage stamp, an old key, cetain brand beverage or food, or a hobby or sport.

I'm also happy to use an heirloom piece of jewelry you own, whether costume or fine and use it in a new piece. Memories are a very special gift, I believe and should be honored and respected as much as any rare gemstone.

Pirate Secret Treasure Map Ring EBSQ 3D Show Entry - Amethyst Lobster Unique Jewelry

Sometimes I think that it is in learning and embracing my limitations rather than my skills, that I am able to create my best work.

Here is a story about my latest creation.

My son loves pirates and rings. He has several replicas of Captain Jack Sparrow's beautiful rings. One boring day I offered to try to make him a ring. We looked through some books, hoping to find something within my abilities. We came across a picture of Steve Midgett's $100 dollar ring. Hmm.. I don't want to use a $100 bill to make a ring, I said. What else is made of paper, but could be recognized for what it is, even when folded so small? A map!, we both yelled at the same time! A treasure map, like a pirates, like the rolls of extra wallpaper we have behind the basement door! This is how found object art jewelry is made!

I then needed a way to create a connection that would be both comfortable, as it's pressed against the finger, but also completely removable, so the map could be unfolded. I can imagine the pirate removing the ring and undoing it, by candlelight. Perhaps there's a secret message or love poem written on the reverse? Or a picture of a key?

I tried several different methods but none were quite right. My connection solution was finally realized when I found a tiny earrings stud of malachite that has lost it's mate. I snipped the post, filed the end and used a comfortable plastic earring back to secure. It is just right and is very secure.

I singed the edges of the map, for a dramatic final touch. The map can be unfolded and then refolded and connected. Currently entered into the EBSQ 3D paper show.

Happy St. Patrick's Day - Top of the Mornin'

I just wanted to share something green with you this morning. This necklace makes me think of the fairys and the little people that I heard stories about when I was young.

I happened upon these incredible green rondelle beads that remind me of lily pads. I think the main attraction to waterlilys is the play of sunlight on the water and the lilypads. A single yellow glass flower bead looks up from each side, like waterlilies looking up at the sun. The seedbead strand plays with sunlight in the same manner as the other beads. Some glass leaf beads are also used. Sterling silver lobster claw clasp holds necklace securely. Length 19 inches.

Give Live Love Cola Tie Tack Lapel Pin Upcycled - Amethyst Lobster Unique Jewelry

Give a hand! I just wanted to make sure you see what I just added to the site. These tie tacks or lapel pins are VERY limited edition. They are recycled from limited editon Christmas soda cans. So, when they're gone, they're gone. There is a glued tie tack pin on the back, with a secure clasp. There are no sharp edges, these are formed to a soft foam backing during the cutting process. Measure 1 3/4 inches tall.

I've also made them on a stick pin. I'll be adding those to the site soon. Let me know if you need more than one or two, because I'm afraid they might run out quickly.

Santa was on those cans too! But you'll have to wait until next Christmas season to see what I did with Santa!

The Artisan Connection: Etsy can't seem to decide what to do and issues another version of their "Constitution"

I really feel for the independant artists who have to rely on mall type websites to sell online. Places like Etsy start as small start-ups. The artists must change their business plans based on the whims of the owners.

I wish everyone would just support Indie (independant) website owners. Then there would be no need for those malls.

Copper Jewelry - a Different Style

Recently I added several earrings to the site, utilizing new copper findings. Most of my work is done with sterling silver, so this is a new adventure for me. I feel like an artist that has literally added a new color to her palette. It's very inspiring.

I am simply in love with these earrings. I wear my own pair of them all the time. The teal blue faceted window glass peeking from beneath the scalloped copper edges reminds me of the backgrounds in paintings by Da Vinci, Raphael and other Renaissance painters. Amazing that a simple pair of earrings can bring such pleasure, but these do. Maybe that's why we wear jewelry.

The same findings go equally well with a totally different set of beads. They are made from Japanese Artistic Stone Jasper. I like the organic style and mystery of these beads.

By the way, copper does not contain nickel. Nickel is the element in jewelry that causes the most allergic reactions. Copper and sterling silver do not contain nickel. I have an allergic reaction to nickel, but I can wear these copper findings (and sterling silver) without a problem. These copper earrings are also lighter in weight than they may appear, as the metal beads are hollow.

Entering Art Jewelry Contests - I'm finding these to be a fun motivation to force myself to try new techniques and designs. I work well with freedom within a defined concept. The inspiration is seeping into all my new designs. You'll see soon!

Redesigning the Website - This is an ongoing challenge. But I have some ideas to make the navigation easier and the jewelry more front and center to you. I'm really excited, actually. Hopefully I'll be able to carry this out soon within the next few weeks.

Creating a Spring - Summer 2007 Line for all the Collections. I find that jewelry falls into seasons, just like fashion. I aim to release a Spring Summer Line before March and then a Fall - Winter Line in late September. Meanwhile, I'll add more items to the site frequently.

Preparing for Monthly Limited Edition Jewelry Designs. These should begin this year in February. This will be a way for me to offer items specially geared towards each month's special days - holidays and birthdays, special events, etc. The items will only be available for that month, so it will be fun and refreshing for all of us.

Is that enough? Well, there's more! But I will spare you the details.

This bracelet is a sampler of materials I often use. It includes a plastic guitar pick, a stainless steel snap, a vintage Indian head wooden nickel, threaded with sterling silver wire and embellished with a flower made of ocean jasper faceted briolette beads, a charm made from an American Express magnet, mixed metal rivets and jumprings. The clasp is a silver metal magnet. I made this bracelet for the EBSQ Art Jewelry Show Contest, although I've made others similar, I had to be sure to add wood, stone and metal to this piece. It was a fun challenge and I plan on making more with these elements.

Since each piece is unique, I will be allowing for customization in the bracelets. I think this is a great way to incorporate little tiny treasures that we all hold onto and never know how to keep them close to us. Like a quilt made of fabric scraps from our childhood clothes can trigger such precious memories, I think a sampler of found objects bracelet can do the same.

Today's Inspiration - Common Postage Stamps
Found Object Art Jewelry Earrings

This is what I like to do - challenge myself to create jewelry from the commonest materials. Some call it trashion. Some call it found object art. They also call it recycling and upcycling.

My challenge today was to use postage stamps. I took a big bag of saved, used stamps and sorted through them. I kept throwing Ike (President Eisenhower) into a bigger and bigger pile. He was the commonest of the batch I had. So - he deserves a glass heart. His campaign motto was I LIKE IKE. But these days, I think he'd get a heart instead.

These earrings are double-sided. There is Ike in mulberry, which matches the dangling heart. And there is the dark side of Ike - a deep gray. These are laminated and the holes are hand riveted. The charm adds some weight, but they are light. I love the way they flutter, showing both sides of Ike.

I really enjoyed making these. They'll be added to the Chelsea Collection soon. There are so many other stamps I could use. Do you have a special request? Let me know - these are easy to customize. If I don't have the stamps, you can send them to me - on the outside of the envelope!

New Products for Holiday Show

I've been busy the past few weeks getting ready for a 2 day holiday show here in town. I was challenged to come up with some designs that would allow the local children to buy for family and friends, without spending too much. The challenge was low cost, quick to make in quantity and yet absolutely COOL!

I've been walking on the beach at Sandy Hook most mornings, with my dog, Kirby (a 5 month old LabraDoodle). It's such an inspirational part of my day. I don't know what people do, who don't live near the water. I'm sure there's something equivalent, but beyond me. Anyway, I thought, maybe I'll try to share images of the walks here with my friends. The Fall is coming and it always changes the colors of the beach in subtle and wonderful ways. Maybe you will see that, as we go through the next few months. Along the way, we'll see a few distinct influences on my jewelry, I'm sure.

Here is what I am excited about this week. Big, big chunks of natural red coral, combined with six strands of peacock pearls. I put them together with a very secure clasp, to create a mermaid bracelet. It's big, bold, and really comfortable.

Spring Training

Today I watched the 2005 New York Yankees as they played their first exhibition game in Spring Training. I love watching the Yankees. They play to win and they do it with class. Isn't that what we all should be doing?

Hearts and Chains and Locks - Valentine Jewelry Making

On the weekend before Valentines day, I can always count on at least a few hopeless souls, wandering into the shop at the end of the day, a desperate look in his eyes. Searching for a gift for his Valentine.

I wanted to bring some special things in to the shop this weekend, especially for a gift.

Well, I ended up only making half, or less than half, of what I planned. But it was fun. First, I started with a stash of old cast-iron lockplates I have. They are the perfect size for a pendant. Since they are a keyhole, they seemed to be half of a toggle clasp. Just need a key for the other half, right? Well, they didn't work quite right as a clasp, but I do enjoy the look, but I created a bracelet anyway.

Then I needed some earrings to go with it.

I made a few other things with the keys.

I really wanted that keyhole as a pendant, at the base of the throat. I played with some beads and found two glass hearts to hold it on either side. I used French silver wire to cover the stringing wire that would have been exposed there. I found a combination of mostly black onyx and glass beads, with a few fun red and white. The back half of the necklace is two strands of matte seed beads. I LOVE this. I might just have to wear it on Valentine's Day, if I don't sell it before that.

My pictures don't ever do justice to the sunlight on glass or gemstones.

While I was searching for beads for the above necklace, I designed another necklace. That's always happens. I loved these little red glass hearts. They are almost spooky, they are so blood like - red with an orange tinge. And the sun shines beautiful in them. I came across these blue large hole beads that match them in hue. Since they all fit on a black rubber cord, All I had to do was add another key in the center.

There are several other themes I had hoped to cover this week. But I've run out of a week! I did manage to get one more bracelet created, that I have thought about for almost a year! I bought this carved coral carp in February of last year, from my good friend who sells in a gallery next to mine. I can't wait to show her, I found a home for it, amongst some natural jade beads that I had also bought from her, and big fake pearls.

Sometimes it's just fun to wear jewelry. No statements needed. I had lots of fun a few weeks ago, sorting art glass beads by color and matching with round semi-precious stones. Here, orange carnelians mix with bumpy beads. I love walking around the city and seeing the bright fashion colors. Spring is coming, someday soon. The storefronts say it is.

Here's one of the crosses I made the other night. I like this one. It feels very powerful. An artist friend told me how everything has to start with a powerful symbol or story. That's what gives meaning to objects, when the meaning is already within us. So, I like to wear a cross. It causes reactions. And for me, it is healing.

To Everything There is a Season

It's a new begining. I am dreaming. Last night I dreamed of green computer circuit boards shredded and mixed with peacock feathers, freshwater pearls and abalone beads. It was balanced by black industrial rubber from within a keyboard. Blacks stars made of hemitate and crystal shone from the jagged cuts in it.

A nightmare or a necklace? Haha..we'll see. I'm inspired!

More jewelry is coming soon. Today I worked on 3 cross pendant necklaces and a bracelet. I will go and finish them now.

Journals, Blank Books, Sketch Books

My sister claims that I'm the only adult in the world that uses Marble composition books. I've always used them, since about 13, when I first started writing. At the time, they were the only "blank books". I have dozens of them, filled with my changing handwriting and stars in the margins. I would also experiment with the other blank book available then, the black hardcover sketch books, found in art supplies stores.

Now there are so many different types of blank books and sketch books. I'm always on the lookout for the perfect one. Somehow, it matters, the quality of the paper, the size, the placement of the margins, etc. When I find a good one, it's as if the pen or pencil sinks into the paper without effort. Writing or sketching becomes so much easier, is even inspired.

Memories
Memories. They are so powerful. More powerful, sometimes, than the present state. Why do we need these memories? To remember the lessons that we've learned? To remember the love that we've been given. To make us stronger - to hope. To not forget.

I know that many of my buyers are buying memories, not really little bits of broken toys or books or an old eraser wheel with a brush. These objects are just triggers to their own wonderful memory. They are like portals or black holes. You pick one up and you are transported.

The older I get, the more I value the memories. It's not that I want to go back. It's more like I feel the responsibility, to not forget.

There are some objects that are triggers for a personal memory. That's their main attraction. Then there are other objects that "have a history"
that is so strong, they are the memory itself, though no one is left to tell you the original story. These objects attract us - they are powerful.
They sit there and challenge you to take care of them - to remember for them.

The smallest little things can get to me. I buy lots of boxes of "stuff". Like the contents of a desk drawer or old toy box. There are lots of
things you won't find in an antique shop or on Ebay - but they are things that shouldn't be forgotten. For example, boxes of old "stuff" often
contain pencil stubs. These are pencils that are used all the way to the eraser. Used until you cannot sharpen them anymore. When was the
last time you did that? When did you last use a pencil? When did you sharpen one? When did you use one everyday until it was just a stub
that could no longer be sharpened?

There is a lesson in those pencil stubs. Waste not, want not. They were made with quality (I don't think many of the new pencils could
stand up to that much use.) They were treasured and appreciated. There are other lessons, I'm sure, in the old desk drawer. There are other
memories. Can you find them?

Where are We?
This is a place where I explore the reasons that I am drawn to buying and selling antiques and other old objects. It's so much more than just a retail job. It's as though I am a rescuer first, then a caretaker, then a matchmaker. I deal with memories and mysteries. I find that people are drawn to them. They NEED them. Why? Why do we need these mysteries and memories?

I'm thinking about it. I'll let you know.

A visit to the Met

I went to see the special Vermeer exhibit called Vermeer's Materpiece The Milkmaid. The focal point, of course is the titled piece, on loan to the Met. They have also gathered all their own Vermeers together and some other works by Vermeer's contemporaries.

The Milkmaid surprised me. I thought I knew Vermeer. I thought I knew what all the fuss was about him. The light, the composition, the servant girl, I've seen these before and admired them. I have always loved Young Woman with a Water Pticher.

But the Milkmaid is not the same! It is crisp, crisp, crisp lines. It is so much more of a photographic portrayal. And the colors are just so right. It is beautiful. It is worth going to see if you have the opportunity.

It also pointed out to me yet again, how important it is to see works of art firsthand. A picture of the works can never fully give you the same experience. In a book, pictures of these two works will look very similar. In the same room with both originals, you will be struck by their differences.
